For almost 20 years, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced ongoing armed conflict. The next presidential elections are scheduled for October 2016. Free and fair elections can decisively move the country towards meaningful democracy and long-term stable peace. But credible, free and fair elections next year require freedom of assembly and freedom of speech today. Over the past 9 months, there has been a disturbing rise in incidences of arbitrary arrests of peaceful opposition voices, including pro-democracy youth activists, Fred Bauma and Yves Makwambala.
