Yves Makwambala, 32 years old, was born and raised in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is a graduate of the Higher School of the Trades for Computer Science and Commerce (ESMICOM) in network administration and database management.
At the time of his detention on March 15, Yves was the IT specialist for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in the DR Congo—which fired him soon after. He was also an entrepreneur and consultant for several businesses.
Yves was the webmaster and graphic designer for the youth activist organization FILIMBI. It is not clear whether or not Yves himself is an activist.
He was held in solitary confinement for 40 days by the National Intelligence Agency, then transferred on April 24 to Makala Prison. He first appeared in court on April 28.
Yves enjoys cinema, video games, following the news, and sports, especially karate.
